Preventing falls: Changes you can make today

Did you know that falls are one of the most common reasons older adults get hurt? The good news is, many falls can be prevented. A few small changes can help you stay active and safe.

Why falls happen

Falls don’t mean you’re clumsy or “getting old.” They can happen because of:

  • Weak muscles or balance problems
  • Vision or hearing changes
  • Dizziness from medicines
  • Slippery floors or poor lighting

Everyone’s risk is different. That’s why talking with your healthcare provider matters. If you haven’t talked with your provider yet, it’s a good idea to do it soon.

Simple ways to protect yourself

Take care of your body

  • Stay active. Walking, stretching or swimming can help keep you strong and steady.
  • Get your eyes and ears checked every year.
  • Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if your medicines could make you dizzy.
  • Drink enough water. Drinking too little water can cause you to feel dizzy.

Make your home safer

  • Remove throw rugs, clutter and loose cords.
  • Keep rooms and hallways well lit, especially at night.
  • Use handrails on stairs and grab bars in the bathroom.
  • Wear shoes that fit well and have non-slip soles. Skip socks on smooth floors.

Be extra careful in the bathroom

  • Use non-slip mats in the shower or tub.
  • Consider a shower chair or hand-held shower head.
  • Take your time – no rushing.

Plan ahead, just in case

  • Keep a phone or medical alert device close by.
  • If you live alone, set up a daily check-in with someone you trust.
  • Learn how to get up safely if you do fall. A physical therapist can show you how.

Start the conversation

Falls are not a normal part of aging. If you’ve felt unsteady, dizzy, worried about falling or you have fallen before, tell your provider. Talking about it today could help protect your independence tomorrow. If you’ve already talked with your provider about falls, keep checking in.
