Staying active for healthy aging

Getting older doesn’t mean slowing down – it means moving differently.

At every age, being active can help you feel stronger, steadier, and more confident in your day. Even small amounts of movement can make a big difference. And the best part? You can start right where you are.

Why moving matters

You may have been asked about activity by your healthcare provider before. That’s because staying active can help you:

  • Have more energy
  • Keep your heart healthy
  • Strengthen muscles and bones
  • Improve balance and help prevent falls
  • Sleep better and feel more rested
  • Keep your mind sharp

Activities like walking, swimming, dancing, yoga or light weight training all count.

Start small – every little bit counts

If you haven’t been active in a while, that’s okay. You don’t need to run a marathon.

Try:

  • A five to 10-minute walk
  • Gentle stretching while watching TV
  • Standing up and moving every hour

Little steps add up. When you feel ready, you can slowly do more.

Listen to your body

Some mild soreness is normal when you’re getting started. But pain is not. If something doesn’t feel right, stop and rest.

Talk with your healthcare provider

Before you start, or if you want to try something new, it’s a good idea to talk with your provider. And even if you’ve already talked with your provider about activity, it’s a good idea to keep checking in.

You can ask:

  • What kind of activity is safe for me?
  • How much should I start with?
  • Are there exercises I should avoid?

Together, you can make a plan that works for your body and your health goals.

The bottom line

Staying active isn’t about doing more than everyone else. It’s about doing what’s right for you to stay healthy as you age. Take one small step today and talk with your doctor about how movement can help you feel your best.
