Going to see your doctor is an important part of making sure that you stay healthy. But sometimes our lives can get busy, keeping us from checking in on our health. Lack of transportation or other factors may also make it difficult to get to the doctor. But even if you can’t physically get to your doctor’s office, you can still schedule some time to meet with your doctor from the comfort of your home or wherever you are, so you don’t miss out on important care.
Telehealth is a doctor or health visit that happens electronically by talking or messaging on a phone, setting up a video call, or through remote health monitoring with health tracking devices. You can use telehealth for a variety of non-emergency health visits, including:
If you’re in an emergency situation, call 911.
The types of devices you need for telehealth may depend on the type of telehealth visit. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), many visits may require you to use video and audio, so you will need an internet connection and a computer, smartphone or tablet. Your provider may also be able to tell you what you will need to be able to schedule a telehealth visit.
Telehealth can be more immediate and convenient than booking an appointment with a primary care provider, which may not happen for weeks. It may allow you to get medical care and advice on a trip or a vacation, which reduces your worry and stress.
If you think telehealth will make it easier and more convenient for you to get the care you need, ask your provider about the options that are available to you.
Like any doctor’s appointment, you should prepare for a telehealth visit so that you get the most out of it. The HHS recommends these things to know before your telehealth visit:
Telehealth is a helpful tool that you can use to ensure that you are getting necessary preventive care when you need it. While telehealth may not be a substitute for every type of care, it can make it easier for you to get the care you need to stay on track with your treatment and health.
