When you need medical care quickly, knowing where to go for which problems can help you get the right care at the lowest cost to you. Here are some tips to help you choose the best option.
Your primary care provider (PCP)
PCPs aren’t just for routine care. For minor illness or injury, call your PCP first. They know you best, and they can treat many of the same issues an urgent care can. If your PCP can’t treat you, they’ll tell you where to go.
Urgent care clinic
An urgent care clinic is an option for when you need care soon, but your PCP isn’t available. Some urgent care clinics are open evenings and weekends, and some may offer tests or services your PCP may not (like X-rays or certain lab tests).
Emergency room (ER)
The ER is for issues that are severe or life-threatening. ERs are open 24/7 and have care teams that are specially trained to treat serious health problems and injuries.
Here’s a guide to help you know where you can get care. For issues that both your PCP and urgent care can treat, try your PCP first. If you think you’re having an emergency – even if it’s not listed here – trust yourself and go to the ER or call 911.
