Summer safety tips: Stay cool, stay safe and soak up the fun

Summer is the season for barbecues, sunshine and road trips. Whether you’re planning a vacation or just relaxing in your own backyard, staying safe is key to having a great time in the summer. Here are some easy, practical safety tips to keep you and your loved ones healthy and happy all summer long.

It’s fun to be out in the sun, but ultraviolet (UV) radiation brings health risks. Take a few simple steps to protect yourself.

  • Apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming.
  • Cover up with light, breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with 100% UV protection.
  • Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is strongest.

Water safety

Whether you’re going to the pool, lake or ocean, water can be fun but also dangerous if you’re not careful.

  • Never swim alone and always supervise kids around the water.
  • Use a life jacket when boating or in open water.
  • Avoid diving in unfamiliar waters.
  • Learn CPR and basic first aid in case of emergencies.

Hydration

It’s easy to forget to drink water when you’re busy having fun, but staying hydrated is essential in the heat.

  • Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty.
  • Avoid sugary, alcoholic or caffeinated drinks when spending time in the sun.
  • Watch out for signs of dehydration or heat exhaustion like dizziness, fatigue, nausea or excessive sweating.

Fire up the grill

Grilling and bonfires are summer staples, but they can come with risks.

  • Never leave a grill unattended and always keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Keep your grill 10 feet away from buildings or anything flammable.

Protecting your pets

Pets are members of our families, too, so make sure they enjoy summer just as much as you.

  • Make sure pets have access to shade, water and cool surfaces.
  • Avoid taking them on long walks during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Don’t bring them to fireworks shows.

Summer is a time for making memories, but it’s important to be proactive about safety. By taking a few simple precautions, you can ensure a summer full of sunshine and smiles.
