Healthcare can be a difficult world to navigate, but it can be more challenging if you don’t have a trusted partner working with you. Your primary care provider (PCP) can be that trusted partner. Choosing a PCP is an important step and means that you have an ally who can help you stay on top of your health and live your healthiest life.
When looking for a PCP, here are a couple things to keep in mind:
Find an in-network PCP
Make sure that you choose an in-network PCP. If you see an out-of-network provider, you will pay more out-of-pocket costs and not get the full advantage of your healthcare benefits. Seeing an in-network PCP means that you'll keep more of your healthcare dollar in your pocket by paying less for office visit copays, if applicable to your plan, and other services.
Decide what type of PCP you prefer
Your PCP can be a family practice, internal medicine, pediatrician, OB-GYN or general-practice provider. The type of provider you choose as your PCP may depend on what kind of care you need. If you have a family, that may also affect the kind of provider you choose. Think about your care needs and what you look for in a provider to narrow down your search.
