7 fast facts about cervical cancer

How much do you know about cervical cancer? Test your knowledge with these facts.

  1. Most cervical cancers are caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV).
  2. Cervical cancer often doesn't cause symptoms in the early stages.
  3. Cervical cancer can be prevented. Getting the HPV vaccine if you’re eligible and getting regular screenings (like a Pap test and HPV test) helps protect you and catch problems early.
  4. More than 1 in 5 (20%) cervical cancers are found in women over age 65. But these cancers are rare in women who’ve been screened regularly.
  5. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that in 2026, about 13,490 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
  6. About 4,200 women will die in 2026 from cervical cancer.
  7. Cervical cancer screening is preventive care. If you’re a Blue Cross of Idaho member, it’s covered it at little to no cost to you when you see an in-network provider.

Schedule your screening today. Regular screening for cervical cancer should start at age 21. Talk with your provider about when and how often you should be screened. If you need help finding a provider, use our Find Care tool by logging into the member website or by using the Blue Cross of Idaho app. To download the Blue Cross of Idaho member app, find it in the App Store or Google Play.
